Marketing Techniques That Will Transform Your Business
With so much competition in the online world, what can you
do to stand out and rise above your competitors? I’ve already discussed some
different methods
for marketing
online, such as Direct Placement®,
PPC,
SEO, Social
Media, Etc. Let’s look at some other techniques that will not only bring you
traffic, but increase conversions.
Create
Content
Creating content is one of the best ways to gain attention
from people interested in what you do. There are a bunch of ways to create
content; blogs, vlogs, social media, videos, etc. The important thing to
remember is you don’t want to blatantly sell your products or services with
this content, instead what you are aiming for is to establish yourself as an
expert in your field.
Blogging is an effective way to present yourself as an expert as well as include keywords on your website. Your goal should be to write blogs that help your ideal customer solve problems or learn about different aspects of what you do. Linking to other blogs that you like and occasionally having guest bloggers can help bring exposure to your blog.
When you write your blog there are a couple things to avoid.
Keyword stuffing used to be a way to rank well, however Google has become wise
to this tactic. Having quality content is more important than loading up on
keywords. Kind of in the same vein, try to avoid writing on the same topic
repeatedly. Overlapping subject matter doesn’t actually help your rankings,
instead it’s better to revise older posts and make them better.
One of the most powerful ways to connect with people on the internet and show
them you know what you’re talking about is video. YouTube is the second most
used search engine, behind Google, and it’s free to post as much as you want.
Most of us have a cell phone with a decent camera and there are numerous free
video editing programs, so really there is no excuse not to make something.
Along with other tips, this Ahrefs blog has the useful tip to
repurpose blog posts as videos. This is a really good way to have material to
create videos about.
Be Active
in Your Community
I have been playing music for more than a decade and it has
become a great way to make some extra cash for doing something I love. Some of
the best advice I’ve received from seasoned musicians over the years is to
“keep your face fresh”. What they meant is that I need to be active in the
musical community by going to jam sessions, supporting other musicians by going
to their shows and joining the online community. By being active, I ended
getting lots of work and meeting a lot of cool people.
The same advice rings true for your community. Get out there
and keep your face fresh, this advice has been given by a lot of successful
people including HuffPost
(The Huffington Post Complete Guide To Blogging). This will look different for
different industries and different people. For example, if you are in the world
of marketing (which is mostly an online community), this might look like
commenting on blogs and social media, participating in forums, answering
questions on sites like Quora, and being a guest on a blog or a podcast, etc.
The more people in your community that see your face or read
your name, the better, especially if you are offering your expertise with
quality information, advice or skills.
Create a
Great User Experience
When people look you up on the internet, their experience
will dictate their impression of you. It’s important to present yourself in a
professional light. This really starts with your website, make it look clean
and easy to navigate. People will click away if your site is not user friendly
and it will leave a bad impression on them. Make sure your website is secure by
using https. Sometimes, when using http, search engines will alert users that
the site is not secure before they can enter your site. This will scare off
users before they can even check out the site you worked hard to put up.
If you choose to advertise on your site, be careful not to
negatively impact the user experience. When I visit a site to check out a blog
post or something, and a pop up immediately blocks me from reading, I find it
irritating and will go elsewhere for the info I’m looking for. That’s not to
say advertising on your site is a bad thing, it can be done tastefully in a way
that doesn’t damage the user experience.
It really is important to specialize and be an expert at
what you do. It should be obvious to people looking for products or services
that you provide, that YOU are the person/ business they should contact.
In previous posts I have stated that it is important to
diversify your advertising methods, and while I stand by this, I think it’s
important to clarify that you should not over-extend to have a presence
everywhere. Choose one or two methods and focus your attention on them so that
you run effective campaigns before expanding. For example, have paid
positioning with Direct
Placement® on Google and complement that by creating content to help you
rank better organically. This will also add to the user experience because you
will be more involved in how people find you.
Email is still an excellent way to market, and if you create
a great user experience on your site you can collect more emails and build
solid lists. Check out this blog
from HubSpot on email marketing.
Use
Analytics
Using analytics is a must to develop an effective marketing
strategy. Google provides awesome free tools like Google Analytics and Search
Console. Neil Patel has a video
on great tools to use for marketing (he also touches on revising old blogs
instead of overlapping, mentioned earlier).
Analytics help you stay informed on how your campaigns are
doing so you can make adjustments as you go. Be consistent about reevaluating
your marketing strategy on a regular basis, there is always room for
improvement and the landscape of internet marketing is constantly changing.
Conclusion
If you take one thing away from this post it should be to
present yourself as an expert. If you started a business in something you
should have expertise in it, so go out there and share it! Keep your face fresh
by creating content and being active in your community. Make sure people who
visit your site know that you are good at what you do and make it easy for them
to use your site.
