Kailua-Kona Hawaii, A Royal Paradise
Kailua-Kona
Hawaii, A Royal Paradise
Located on the west coast of the Big Island of Hawaii lies
the paradise
of Kailua-Kona. Once home to Kamehameha the Great, ruler of the first
Kingdom of Hawaii, this is a place truly fit for a king. Kailua-Kona has much
to offer for all kinds of different visitors. A wealth of cultural and
historical significance, those looking to experience Hawaiian culture need to
check out Kailua-Kona. Hawaii hosts lots of festivals every year, including the
Annual Kona Coffee Cultural Festival, and Kailua-Kona is the start and finish
for the Ironman World Championship. Kailua-Kona also offers so much for nature
lovers and water enthusiasts, from national parks and aquatic life to
snorkeling and sailing. Home to restaurants, nightlife, and shopping as well,
there is something for everyone in this royal paradise.
Hawaiian
Art, Culture, and History
The culture and history of Hawaii is rich and meaningful.
Experiencing traditions such as Hula or Luau is really a one-of-a-kind
experience unlike anywhere else on Earth. The combination of dance,
storytelling and ancestral knowledge, Hula keeps the history and culture of
Hawaii alive through the telling of history, prophecy, and genealogy through an
artistic and culturally significant dance. Hula can come in many forms, from a
slow and somber feel to a quick and jolting pace, and it really is an
unforgettable experience. The Luau, a feast with music and cultural
performances, is another part of Hawaiian culture that you don’t want to miss.
Some of the dishes you’ll likely find at a Luau are Poi, a Polynesian
traditional food made from the taro plant, and the Kalua Pig, shredded pork
cooked in an underground oven.
Kailua-Kona is home to Hulihee Palace, a home for Hawaiian
Royalty built in 1838. The palace is now a museum and features artifacts from
the era of King Kalakaua and Queen Kapiolani. Once a month the Palace features
a free concert and performances. The town is also home to Mokuaikaua Church,
which was the first Christian Church in Hawaii. The church is right across the
street from King Kamehameha’s final home, Ahuena Heiau.
Hawaii has long been an important part of the film industry,
with the list of movies filmed here being too long to count. But beyond large
blockbusters like Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park, Hawaii has a vibrant and
buzzing local film scene. Many of these filmmakers are dedicated to telling
local stories unique to Hawaii, the Hawaiian people and culture. Established in
1981, the Hawaii International Film Festival is a must see for any film lovers
out there. 70,000 film enthusiasts gather to support and experience the work of
talented filmmakers from all over Asia and the Pacific. The festival also
features a Made in Hawaii section.
Festivals
and Events
The start and finish to the Ironman World Championship,
Kailua-Kona is the happy home of the triathlon. Though the last 2 championships
have been canceled, it is expected to make a comeback in the Fall of 2022. Kona
is famous for its coffee and every November the Island of Hawaii holds their Annual
Kona Coffee Cultural Festival. The festival includes local art, cultural
displays, coffee seminars, quilt shows, and so much more. The Island of Hawaii
is home to many other events, including live music, comedy, art shows, golf
tournaments, etc. Definitely check out what’s happening on your next visit.
For
Nature Lovers
The waters of South Kona are clear and calm due to
protection from the wind by Mauna Loa. This makes them ideal for snorkeling,
sailing, scuba and wildlife watching. Dolphins, Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, and
Manta Rays frequent the area, making for an unforgettable scuba or snorkeling
trip. Deep sea fishing is another popular activity, offering fishing unlike
most other areas in the United States.
Kailua-Kona is also near a couple of amazing parks,
including the Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park and the Puuhonua o
Honaunau National Historical Park. South
of Kona International Airport, Kaloko-Honokohau is home to sacred temples,
petroglyphs, fishponds, and local wildlife. Once considered Royal Grounds,
Puuhonua o Honaunau at Honaunau Bay was also home to a sacred place of refuge
where Ancient Hawaiian lawbreakers could be absolved of their crimes. The park
is home to a Great Wall, images of Hawaiian deities, a sacred temple, and
fishponds.
Kailua-Kona is a royal paradise unlike anywhere else. From a
deep dive into Hawaiian history and culture, to world-class events, to the
beautiful scenery and wildlife, and to unforgettable beach and water
activities, Kailiua-Kona is a must visit.
